West Valley School District has already made tough decisions, reducing the budget by $250,000. Unfortunately, this has led to an increase in class sizes as four staff positions have not been filled. Smaller classes mean more effective teaching and better student outcomes. Should the levy not pass, several additional teaching positions will be lost. Let’s prioritize our students’ well-being and create an optimal learning environment through retaining important staff positions. Reminder- there is no school from March 25th to April 1st! March 25-29 is Spring Break and April 1st is a PIR day.

Student aides provide targeted assistance to students, ensuring that gaps in learning are bridged. Support staff are key to helping struggling learners succeed academically. Their guidance prepares students for high school and the workforce. Small group learning for struggling students has significantly decreased over the past school year due to budget limitations resulting in lost support staff positions. Schools are becoming a prime target for cybercriminals who want to steal data, extort money, or disrupt education. The number of incidences of usernames and passwords tied to Montana school district employees that were breached increased per employee by about 10% last year. Each of these breaches come with the potential of an attack that can cost a school district time, money, and resources. West Valley Technology Levy will be utilized to help protect student data and privacy through cybersecurity subscriptions and personnel.

A lot has changed for the world, and schools, since 2007. In 2007, West Valley’s student population stood at 390 students. Fast forward to 2024, and that number has nearly doubled, reaching 760 students. As West Valley School’s student population has dramatically increased, the need for additional funding becomes even more critical. Reminder that Thursday, and Friday are early release and all students will be released at 1pm. Please note that Friday the 15th is NOT a late start. School will start at the regular time, 8:15 (4-8) and 8:20 (K-3).

A lower student-to-staff ratio is vital for a safer school environment. During critical times like recess and lunch, staff members can closely monitor students. However, West Valley grapples with challenges due to our budget constraints. Maintaining the required 50:1 student-to-staff ratio for outside and lunch monitoring is crucial, but it’s become difficult due to lost staff positions. Currently, staff are often redirected from other essential areas—such as counselors, administrators, and classroom aides—to ensure we meet this necessary ratio. Let’s work together to prioritize safety!
